AFI Movie Club Celebrates MA RAINEY’s Black Bottom With Director George C. Wolfe

AFI AWARDS celebrates MY RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM with brand new content featuring Colman Domingo and director George C. Wolfe. Domingo accepts the honor of the AFI AWARDS on behalf of the creative body and presents the film to the public of the AFI Movie Club. Wolfe takes the audience “Behind the Scene” of the opening sequence, “We went from the sound of breathing and fear to the sound of possibility, which I think in many ways, the blues.”

Watch the clip featuring Wolfe below, and the clip with Domingo here.

“MY RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM is both a grand tribute to owning your voice and a step back in time to expose the challenges of leading change in America. This symphony of genius begins with the musical words of August Wilson and extends from the stage to the screen by the incomparable George C. Wolfe, whose attention to detail and many nuances of humanity create an opus as explosive as it is entertaining. As “mother of the blues”, Viola Davis engraves its name in granite as a true national treasure, and this film stands out as an unmissable experience to experience the power and poetry of Chadwick Boseman.” -The American Film Institute

The AFI AWARDS celebration is sponsored by Audi, which has supported AFI programs for 17 years. To commemorate each of the AFI AWARDS winners, Audi has created the AFI AWARDS Audi Scholarship Initiative offering scholarships in the winners’ names to women and BIPOC Scholars at the AFI Conservatory – for a total contribution of $250,000. Congratulations to Rediet Yared, Screenwriting Fellow, recipient of the AFI AWARDS Audi Scholarship on behalf of AFI AWARDS winner MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM.
