Carthage Music Club celebrates America | New

The Carthage Music Club celebrated the annual American Music Parade on November 9 in the Murphy-Payne Hall on the Panola College campus.

Jacinda Gwinn presented the program with works by six renowned American composers. Gwinn recounted the outstanding accomplishments and musical contributions of each composer as club members performed a selection from each composer.

Leonard Bernstein’s “I Feel Pretty” West Side Story was performed by soprano Kristy Cawthon with Stephen George as accompanist. Soloist Sandra Bauer sang “The Way We Were” composed by Marvin Hamlisch. Elizabeth Morris accompanied on the piano.

“Far and Away,” a John Williams film theme, was presented by pianist Becky Gullette.

Stephen Sondheim’s “Broadway Baby” by Follies was dramatically presented by Tori Windham, accompanied by her grandmother Joyce Hughes who also performed “Glassworks, No. 1, Opening” composed by Philip Glass.

“Animal Crackers II” composed by Eric Whitacre, using three poems by Ogden Nash, was performed by Marcia McKillop, soprano; Sarah Baker, viola; and Eric Lawrence, tenor.

Judy Galetar accompanied the trio.

“America, the Beautiful,” written by schoolteacher Katharine Lee Bates in 1893, was read by Claire Windham to end the program.

The National Federation of Music Clubs observes American Music Month each November through the Parade of American Music. The Parade of American Music honors its founder, Ada Holding Miller, by encouraging NFMC clubs to increase programming and performances of American music; bring more recognition to American composers; stimulate public appreciation and awareness of American music; and broaden the knowledge of American music.

Club members performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “America, I Love You” conducted by Cawthon and accompanied by Sarah Baker. Gwinn led the members to recite the NFMC Collect.

President Hubbard led the business meeting which included information on the Spring Fundraising Concert and the Texas Federation of Music Club District III Fall Convention held at the First United Methodist Church.

The hostesses for the meeting were Baker, Galetar and Windham.

The members present were Baker, Bauer, Cawthon, Carolyn Copeland, Galetar, George, Gullette, Gwinn, Hubbard, Hughes, Elinor Humphreys, Nancy Langford, Lawrence, McKillop, Morris, Claire Windham and Tori Windham. Special guests were Charles Hughes, Austin Adkison, Abbikate Cawthon and Ellie Cawthon.
