Drama Club @ The Center Seeking Volunteers for Student Programs

Drama Club @ the Center performed a self-written play at the end of the school year. The club is looking for additional volunteers to staff the growing program for the upcoming school year.

In the fall of 2021, Sun Downtown United Methodist Church Public School Outreach Ambassadors met with area public school leaders to discuss housing safer social groups that may be available for the children of SouthShore families, regardless of their ability to pay. This spurred a plan to address the need for affordable, fun, and purposeful after-school enrichment activities, and Drama Club @ the Center was born.

The program was a success and enrollment reached full capacity in October 2021. Drama students were taught the basics of acting as well as other elements of theatre. As the group progressed, the students collaborated to write and produce their own play.

From characters to storylines, storyline and surprises, Drama Club @ the Center attendees were the driving force behind Mysterious Happenings, an original mystery play that was performed at the end of the school year. The drama students worked hard to memorize their lines and provide input into set design and costume development, while practicing a new set of acting skills. The play was a great success and appreciated by the community.

“As a theater kid myself, working with local children and youth to develop their acting skills is fun for me,” said Jennifer Glancy, Children’s Ministry Coordinator. “I’m really proud of what our little drama club has been able to accomplish in a few months and I can’t wait to see what next year’s performance will be.”

With the growing number of students interested in the after-school program, there is a critical need for volunteers. With more volunteers selected, Glancy hopes to increase the size and age ranges of the club. Volunteer positions included drama teachers, van monitors, van drivers, grant writers, Sunday school and children’s club teachers, and program aides.

“One of our biggest challenges remains building a large enough team of volunteers,” Glancy said. “So if you love theatre, have a passion for working with children, and have a desire to do good in the community, we welcome applicants.”

While Sun Downtown United Methodist Church is fortunate to support the community through various after-school enrichment activities, donations to facilitate the Drama Club @ the Center and other programs and events for local children and youth are also welcome.

“I am blessed to work with a church that values and invests in its community,” Glancy said. “They can see that providing local families with positive and uplifting outlets for the enrichment of a worthwhile cause.”
