Semiahmoo Fish and Game Club officials say damage assessment is ongoing, following torrential rains that flooded the property at 1284 184 St. earlier this week.
Club chairman Diana Barkley said on Thursday (November 18) that volunteers undertook a “major cleanup” at the site on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the property is safe for the public to visit – although “if we have to closing bridges/paths will mark them for us accordingly.
“The trails took a hit with lots of areas under water and trees on the trails,” Barkley explained. “There is also a large traffic jam right by the bridge at the top of the walking trail loop.”
The grounds around Little Campbell Hatchery were covered in about a foot and a half of water during the storm, and the fish fence that allows volunteers to count salmon as they head upstream was also been submerged. As a result, salmon have been spotted spawning in the driveway, parking lot and grassy area of the facility.
More than 100 salmon were returned to the river on Wednesday, Barkley said, also noting that many fry that had been in the hatchery’s coho pond awaiting a spring release ended up in the river well before the date. planned.
Water has also seeped into the hatchery building, and Barkley said the walls will need to be checked for mold once dry.
She is optimistic that hard work will prevail.
“A lot of work lies ahead of us, but we have a great group of volunteers who will help restore things to how they were.”
