Zonta Club of Jamestown honors 2021 and 2022 scholarship recipients | News, Sports, Jobs

The Zonta Club of Jamestown gathered on April 20 to honor its 2021 and 2022 scholars.

Annika Spitzer received a Nell Newton Scholarship of $1,000.00, awarded to a young woman pursuing a career in business. Currently a senior at Jamestown High School, Annika will be attending St. Bonaventure University in the fall to study Public Relations and Media Management.

Morgan Torrey, a senior at Jamestown High School, received one of two $1,000 Mary Barger scholarships awarded to young women considering professional careers. Morgan will attend Brockport State University majoring in physical therapy.

Genesis Cosme graduated from Dunkirk high school and also received a Mary Barger scholarship. She will attend nursing school at Jamestown Community College, hoping to one day work in neonatal care.

Lily Melquist, a sophomore at Fredonia State University, is a theater arts major and is in the honors program, was awarded a $1,000 Verna Nelson Scholarship. The award is given to a young woman entering her third or fourth year of undergraduate studies and is endowed and selected by the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation. This award is based on academic achievement and participation in extracurricular activities.

Two other 2021 winners were unable to attend the Zonta awards ceremony. Shantell Phelps was also selected by the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation as the recipient of the $1,000.00 Verna Nelson Scholarship. Madison Mathews received a $1,000 Anne H. Crowe Scholarship, presented to a woman returning to school after an absence, so she can prepare for better career opportunities.
